About Autism Society Nova Scotia Autism Society Nova Scotia is a non-profit charitable organization. The Society was created in 1995 by a group of parents looking to share experiences and gain support from one another. Currently, the society is run by a voluntary board of directors and a paid executive director. The society offers a summer day camp, support groups, family outings, advocacy, education, and awareness. The society holds charitable status and does not recieve any public funding. The Fundraising & Awareness Committee plans and executes events to raise money for the day-to-day running of the society and to offset program costs.
It can be easy to confuse the the ASNS and the Provincial Autism Centre (PAC) especially because we work so closely together. Although we are two separate entities we have a common goal – to help and to educate everyone who is touched by or interested in Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Autism Society Nova Scotia (ASNS) is primarily involved in support for families, friends, and individuals with ASD. We run support groups, try to link up families, provide education wherever it is needed, and raise awareness about ASDs. We speak to schools, community colleges, service groups – to whomever is interested. We also have an advocacy function.
The Provincial Autism Society (PAC) is an information, resource, and activity centre of which the Library is an integral part. The PACs target group goes beyond families and individuals to include educators, students, and researchers across the province. The PAC is privately funded and holds charitable status.
